Fan Tip Nozzle

Equipment

Definition

A fan tip nozzle produces a flat, wide spray pattern that distributes water pressure across a broader area, making it the safest nozzle choice for excavation near sensitive underground utilities.

The fan tip nozzle is the most commonly used nozzle type for hydrovac potholing and daylighting work near buried utilities. By spreading the water into a flat, fan-shaped pattern, the nozzle reduces the concentrated force at any single point, minimizing the risk of cutting or damaging utility coatings, insulation, or pipe walls.

Fan tip nozzles are available in various spray angles, typically ranging from 15 to 65 degrees. A wider angle produces a gentler spray suitable for work directly adjacent to utilities, while a narrower angle provides a more concentrated spray for faster soil removal in areas away from infrastructure. Many operators carry multiple fan tip angles and switch between them as they approach or move away from utilities.

The trade-off with fan tip nozzles is slower excavation speed compared to straight-jet or rotary nozzles. The distributed spray pattern removes soil more gradually, which increases dig time but provides superior control. For most potholing and utility exposure work, this trade-off is well worth the reduced risk of utility damage.
