Water Tank

Equipment

Definition

The water tank on a hydrovac truck stores the clean water supply used for pressurized excavation. Capacity typically ranges from 400 to 1,200 gallons and directly affects how long the truck can operate between refills.

The water tank is a critical component that determines the hydrovac truck's endurance on the job site. Water consumption during excavation varies with soil type, operator technique, and water pressure settings, but typical usage ranges from 5 to 15 gallons per minute. A 1,000-gallon tank might provide 1 to 3 hours of continuous digging before requiring a refill.

Water tanks are constructed from aluminum, stainless steel, or carbon steel and are insulated on trucks designed for cold-weather operation. The tank connects to the water pump through a suction line with a strainer to prevent debris from entering the pump. Many trucks include a fill connection compatible with standard fire hydrant outlets, allowing rapid refilling from municipal water sources.

In cold climates, the water tank and all associated plumbing must be protected from freezing. This is accomplished through tank insulation, heated compartments, recirculation systems, and the onboard boiler. The boiler heats the water to temperatures that prevent freezing in the lines and also improve excavation efficiency in frozen ground conditions.
