Hydrovac for Sign Post and Pole Foundation Excavation

6-step process guide with equipment, safety, and cost information.

Sign and pole installation using hydrovac provides safe excavation for traffic signs, light poles, utility poles, and other vertical installations in areas with underground utilities. Traditional auger drilling for post holes poses a significant risk of utility strikes, as the rotating drill cannot detect or avoid buried pipes and cables. Hydrovac eliminates this risk entirely.

The hydrovac process creates clean, precise holes of any diameter and depth needed for sign posts, light pole foundations, flag poles, and similar installations. Unlike auger drilling, hydrovac can work around utility crossings within the hole, exposing and protecting the utility while still providing the needed excavation.

This application is particularly important along roadways, in commercial parking areas, and in urban environments where underground utilities are present at nearly every potential sign or pole location. Transportation departments and commercial developers increasingly specify hydrovac for all post hole excavation in utility-congested areas.

Step-by-Step Process

1

Location and Design

Confirm the sign or pole location, required hole dimensions (diameter and depth), and foundation specifications. Review utility records for the installation area.

2

Utility Locate

Request 811 locates for all utilities in the area. Visually verify marks against known utility records.

3

Hydrovac Excavation

Excavate the post hole using hydrovac to the specified diameter and depth. Use a straight-jet nozzle for clean hole walls.

4

Utility Accommodation

If utilities are encountered in the hole, either adjust the post location or install protection (sleeve, concrete encasement) around the utility per engineering direction.

5

Foundation Installation

Set the sign post, light pole base, or anchor bolt cage in the excavated hole. Verify plumb and alignment.

6

Backfill or Concrete

Backfill with specified material or pour concrete foundation. Brace the post or pole until backfill or concrete has set.

Equipment Recommendations

  • Mid-size hydrovac truck for maneuverability in parking lots and roadways
  • Straight-jet nozzle for clean hole profiles
  • Various hose attachments for different hole diameters
  • Level and plumb tools for post alignment
  • Traffic control equipment for roadway installations

Safety Considerations

  • Always call 811 before excavating post holes
  • Reduce water pressure if unexpected utilities are encountered
  • Maintain traffic control during roadway installations
  • Brace poles securely until foundations are fully cured
  • Use appropriate lifting equipment for heavy poles

Cost Factors

  • Number of holes per mobilization (volume pricing common)
  • Hole diameter and depth specifications
  • Soil conditions (rock, clay, high water table)
  • Surface type at installation location
  • Traffic control requirements
  • Foundation material (concrete vs. compacted backfill)
